Permanent charging wires (hot wires) as supplied with battery monitors; These are not fused when purchased.

Some of us who may use our cars monthly (or less) may, or should, keep them on a battery conditioner using the permanent wire supplied with the charger; that is a charger with the ability to both charge and maintain a vehicles battery between uses. These are a great way to keep the battery topped up without being on a charge at all times, as the battery conditioner is smart enough to know when the battery is fully charged and then, once charged, it will maintain the charge by switching on and off so as to not overcharge.

Christine and I had a less than pleasant experience whilst touring in the UK in a borrowed +8. This wire caught up in the passenger side seat slide and shorted out. Because it was connected directly to the battery and not fused, we had smoldering wires with burning insulation on the carpets and back to where the wire entered the car under the rear floor panel above the battery, as well the fuel tank.
This was made worse by the 4 weeks of luggage packed into the area behind the back of the seat of the +8 which was now over the top of the wire and burning carpet. We quickly stopped by the side of the road and threw our luggage out and fiddled to remove the carpet and floorboard to find the wire was burning all the way back to the battery, next to the fuel tank. I managed to grab a towel and ripped the burning wires away from the battery before any more damage was done.

Lesson: This wire was not fused. This is okay when only the driver is in the car alone. In this example, the passenger seat was being moved regularly to carry side curtains etc throughout a long trip.

Solution: After discussing this with my auto electrician, I now have a small blade type in-line fuse as close to the battery as possible – either wire, as it does not matter which one is fused. The fuse must be as close to the battery terminals as possible so there is as little as possible of this live wire not protected. If it is half metre from the battery you will still have half metre of wire un-fused.

If this ever happened again it would simply blow the fuse and prevent a possible lose of a car from fire. We were very lucky in the UK. I am now working my way through our fleet to be sure this cannot happen again.

I have attached a photo of the in-line blade fuse I used. You will need to have an 8mm terminal attached to one end to attach to the battery terminal and solder the other end to the charging wire. I have them here if you would like one, with the 8mm terminal already soldered on.

This fuse will not prevent the battery conditioner doing it’s job and will also protect against any faulty appliance being used, or even as simple as the terminals of the live socket touching something in the wrong way and being shorted out. The fuse will work in both directions, power in and out.

If you intend using this for a power outlet for example a GPS, phone charger or even a 12-Volt compressor you may need to look at fuse capacity. I use 20 amps which should be ample for any use.
Any thoughts on this please get back to me.
